Our Industries
Energy & Sustainability Innovation
The transition to net zero is driving new technologies, business models and markets, from renewable generation and energy storage to electric mobility and climate tech. We equip innovators, developers and investors to protect their technology, contract on terms that support long-term projects and build businesses that last.
Maybrook Law advises on the legal issues that energy and sustainability businesses face, from commercialising a new technology to the partnerships, supply chains and investment that bring it to scale. We act for UK and international clients, including clean technology businesses establishing or expanding in the UK.
Who we advise
- Climate tech and clean technology companies developing new products, materials and platforms
- Energy and infrastructure businesses, including renewable generation, storage, EV charging and energy efficiency providers
- Investors and acquirers backing or buying energy and sustainability businesses
How we help
Commercial, supply and technology agreements
Energy and sustainability projects depend on long-term relationships between technology providers, manufacturers, installers and customers. We advise on supply and manufacturing agreements, equipment and installation contracts, technology licences, operation and maintenance agreements, and energy-as-a-service and subscription models. We focus on the points that decide these deals: performance guarantees, warranties, delivery and acceptance, pricing mechanisms, liability and termination.
Intellectual property and technology ownership
For many sustainability enterprises, the technology is the business. We advise on protecting and commercialising innovation, including IP ownership, licensing and university spin-out arrangements, joint development agreements and trade secrets, so that clients keep control of the technology that drives their competitive advantage.
Sustainability claims and regulatory compliance
Customers, investors and regulators expect sustainability claims to be accurate and supported by evidence. We advise on environmental and green claims in marketing and product terms, including the CMA’s approach and its enforcement powers under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, and on building sustainability commitments into supply chain contracts. We work with specialist regulatory and technical advisers where sector-specific advice is needed.
Investment, M&A and growth
Investors in energy and sustainability look at technology, contracted revenue and the strength of key partnerships. We advise founders and companies on fundraising, strategic investment, joint ventures and M&A, and on the shareholder arrangements that change as investors come on board. For investors and acquirers, we review IP, commercial contracts and regulatory risk so that issues affecting value are identified before completion.
Technology driving the transition
From smart grids and battery management software to robotics in manufacturing and recycling, much of the energy transition is driven by software, data and automation. Our work with software, AI and robotics businesses gives us practical experience of contracts where hardware, software and services are supplied together, and of how performance and responsibility are allocated between them.
